The story of how the Wahl clipper corporation came to be begins in 1911, when High school student Leo Wahl began experimenting with vibrating electromagnetic motors. While studying for a degree in engineering, Leo designed a vibrating medical massager, which he sold in his spare time to barbers shops.
While doing this, Wahl noticed the need for improved tools for cutting hair, which led him to begin experimenting on a new type of barbers clippers. In 1919, Wahl applied for patents on a revolutionary new set of barbers clippers, the first to house a drive motor incorporated within the unit, rather than a separate motor, connected through a flexible shaft.
The product was developed in close consultation with barbers, helping Wahl to improve and develop the unit. This resulted in a set of Wahl barbers clippers which earned a reputation across the United States as among some of the finest around.
Gradually, as the company became more and more successful, Wahl began to expand its product range to include a host of products to make life easier for barbers and beauticians. In addition to their renowned selection of clippers, they began to offer professional salon hair dryers, hairdressing scissors, curling brushes and combs.
