A common family predisposition involves natural, age-related hormonal changes that can cause hair loss. Six major reasons that you might experience premature hair loss.
1/ Acne is the inflammation of the sebaceous glands from retained secretion and is associated with hormone byproducts. Acne is an indication of hormonal imbalances that often lead to premature hair loss.
2/ Seborrhea is a functional disease of the sebaceous glands that produces excess sebum, which builds up on the scalp. An over production of sebum is a warning sign indicating the same hormonal imbalances that lead to hair loss.

Other contributing factors
Stress and trauma are prone to produce increased levels of testosterone, which converts to DHT, and interrupts the hair growth cycle [constricting the blood supply, oxygen and nutrient uptake and vitamins to the hair follicle]. Nutrition and diet play a significant role in hair loss whereby a high consumption of animal fats, rapid weight loss and liquid protein diets can create a lack of amino acids, biotin, iron, protein and zinc — all of which are essential to healthy hair.
Health issues such as a malfunctioning of the hormone producing thyroid and natural hormonal changes in women due to pregnancy, childbirth and menopause, can trigger hair loss. To truly understand the nature of thinning hair, it is necessary to understand the anatomy of hair and the intricate systems required to produce healthy, long living hair.
Hair has two separate structures…the follicle in the skin and the shaft we see.
The hair shaft is a composite of hard protein called keratin and is comprised of three layers - the inner layer [medulla], the cortex and the outer layer [cuticle]. The cortex makes up the majority of the hair shaft. Tightly packed scales in an overlapping structure, similar to roof shingles, form the cuticle. Most hair conditioning products affect only the cuticle.
There are two types of hair growing on our scalp. The first is the vellus hair. Often described as “peach fuzz,” this very fine hair appears after infancy, is shallow-rooted, very fragile and susceptible to environmental conditions. Simple vigorous shampooing and rough scalp massages can easily cause vellus hair to be damaged and detach from the scalp.
The second is the stronger, more mature and thicker, terminal hair - the hair we all desire to have and keep. With a growth potential of up to 3 feet long, it is the only hair we are able to cut, style and chemically enhance. Terminal hairs are deeply rooted and lie closer to the larger blood vessels - the primary source of essential nourishment.
The Follicle is a stocking-like structure that contains several layers with different functions. At the base of the follicle is a projection called a papilla, which contains tiny blood capillaries that feed the cells. The living part of the hair, called the hair bulb, surrounds the papilla. As the only part fed by the capillaries, cells in the bulb divide every 23 to 72 hours - faster than almost any other cells in the body. This speed of growth can liken hair cell growth to cancer cells growth, and, as chemo therapy attacks faster growing cells lead to you temporally losing hair during chemo treatment due to toxic shock to the papilla. Nioxin can be used prior to, during and after Chemo to reduce the "toxic shock" effect on the hair. It is also worth noting that the same reason applies to cancer patients undegoing chemo getting mouth ulcers, cheek cells being another fast growing group of cells, which chemo therapy can wrongly target.
The follicle’s inner and outer sheath protects and molds the growing hair shaft. The inner sheath follows the hair shaft and ends below the opening of a Sebaceous (oil) gland. The sebaceous gland produces sebum - a fatty material that provides essential elements for the follicle to produce hair; however, it may also carry toxins and pollutants into the follicle. More sebum is produced after puberty. In Men this can contain high levels of di hydrotestosterone or DHT, a major cause of fine and thinning hair in both men and women. Sebum production decreases in women throughout their lives, and also decreases at a lesser degree in men. The outer sheath continues all the way up to the gland. The Arrector Pili muscle attaches below the gland to a fibrous layer around the outer sheath. As this muscle contracts, the hair stands up. In vellus hairs on arms and legs this can be seen as goose bumps.
